Residents of the River Region are fortunate to have access to an extensive variety of local, farm fresh eggs, produce and meat. For many, Buy Fresh, Buy Local has become more than a catchy slogan. It has become a lifestyle.
It Makes Good Cents
Anna McKee, full-time project manager, wife and mother, says that her family has been making the transition to local and organic produce, dairy and meat products for the past several months. “It started as a health decision for us,” said Anna. “We were looking for preservative-free meats and organic produce, but we didn’t want to pay high prices for those things in the big box grocery stores. That’s when I started visiting local farmers markets,” she said. “I realized how convenient it is to buy the vegetables and fruit that we need each week, and the taste and quality is so much better.” She continued, “we have also tried meat, eggs and milk from local farms, and the difference is incredible. I just ordered a half side of beef that will fit in our deep freezer and will feed our family through the winter months.”
Community Supported Agriculture
Many young families, like the McKees, are making the shift to local, seasonal produce, and are finding convenience in a community supported agriculture (CSA). A CSA offers a unique opportunity to support a local farm and share in its harvest. Traditionally, CSA membership involves a season-long commitment to purchase and pick up fresh vegetables and herbs. Membership fees help farmers offset their expenses. In return, members receive a variety of seasonal farm-fresh produce by the bushel weekly or bi-weekly. Those living in the River Region may find the short drive to a rural farm worth the effort. For a list of Alabama CSAs, visit www.localharvest.org/csa/.
The Grass-Fed Micro Farm Alternative
The desire for healthier, better tasting food extends well beyond produce and herbs. Boutwell Farms is a regular vendor at Montgomery farmers markets, and offers high quality beef, pork and poultry using sustainable agricultural practices and artisanal techniques. Based in Clayton, Alabama, Boutwell offers online ordering with pick-up locations across the state as well as UPS door-to-door delivery. Boutwell offers a variety of options that suit all needs and budgets, from a 1.25 lb of sausage to a whole hog or cow. Boutwell Farms is a certified organic farm.
The Face Behind the Produce
For many, the community aspect of CSAs and farm-to-table meats mean an opportunity to build relationships with other people with similar interests and lifestyles. It also gives folks a chance to get to know the farmers that grow their food. Many of the farms offer open house days so you can tour the farm and gain insight into the pleasures and risks of farming.
