Making the Switch - Incandescent vs. CFL vs. LED

There is a lot of information floating around about incandescent, CFL, and LED lighting. Figuring out what kinds of bulbs are right for your home is something that you will have to decide based on your lifestyle and needs.

Incandescent bulbs have ultimately become a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean you should toss out all your working bulbs in order to switch over. Leave incandescent bulbs in the fixtures of rooms and closets that you use infrequently and wait until they burn out to transition to CFL or LED bulbs. If your goal is to have the greatest energy savings and you aren’t too concerned about the brightness of the light they put out, LED lights are probably a good fit for you home. LED bulbs are suited for ceiling lights, but have a limited range when placed in floor and table lamps. CFL bulbs are perfect for lamps that will be left on for more than a few hours; it takes a short time for the bulbs to warm up and reach their maximum brightness. While LED bulbs are more expensive than CFL, the long-term savings over time can be worth the investment.

For more information about switching to CFL or LED lights from your incandescent bulbs, take a trip to your local Home Depot or visit Home Depot’s Eco-Options website to learn about their convenient CFL recycling program.
