Alabama Higher Education Promotes Sustainability

Across the nation, many colleges have taken an active interest in promoting sustainability. Many students are practicing responsible, eco-conscious living by doing such things as recycling their waste and bicycling instead of driving. Others realize that the movement isn’t just a trend; an assortment of careers can be developed with a special emphasis on sustainability and creative, fresh ideas for keeping our environment healthy. Alabama isn’t left behind; campuses across the state are boasting a variety of eco-friendly programs, student groups, and coursework.

University of Alabama

The University of Alabama Environmental Council is a very active student group that, according to their website, “strives to unite other groups interested in appreciation of the natural world, ecological sustainability, and resource conservation.” You can check out their blog at http://uaec.blogspot.com/.

Faulkner University

Wilma Philips, with the support of faculty and staff, began the Green Club Committee at Faulkner University in Montgomery in 2008. It began by taking common sense measures to do such things as reducing water consumption and conserving energy. The committee remains active throughout the year by sending out green hints to Faulkner staff, students, and faculty. Auburn University

Auburn has a new office of Sustainability located in the Langdon Annex. The university offers a minor in Sustainability and coursework that emphasizes awareness of the green movement—classes such as Global Consumer Culture and Green Marketing. These courses and the recent development of the Sustainability program indicate that Auburn is definitely on point in the global push toward ecologically responsible practices. The mission of the program is to provide “tools and resources to help people learn to work and live sustainably; to reduce their impact on the environment while enjoying a full lifestyle.” For more information, including Auburn’s Sustainability News and Events, visit www.auburn.edu/sustainability.
